History

Avalon Education Group Inc.(AEG) is a not-for-profit organization formed by concerned citizens, responsible parents, and experienced educators desirous of providing distinctive and high quality educational opportunities for families in Montgomery County and Lower Frederick County.

In the fall of 2003 AEG opened its first school, The Avalon School, in rented facilities now located at 7000 Radnor Road, Bethesda, Maryland. A boys school in the American liberal arts tradition, grades 3-12. Avalon will graduate its first class in June 2007. With the boys school now established a coordinate school for girls, Brookewood, will open in September 2006 in Kensington, MD. In addition to these traditional ventures, The Thomas More Institute, established by AEG in fall 2005, offers a broad spectrum of services and courses to home schooling families, and the Hanging Rock Outdoor Education Center located in Augusta, West Virginia, provides a venue for field trips, camping and nature study.

In just three short years, The Avalon School has more than doubled its enrollment to 240 boys in grades 3-12 and has had strong showings in such diverse areas as the National Latin Exam and an interscholastic sports program that has taken local titans by surprise. Avalon has a thriving student body, a high admissions acceptance yield, and strong parental support, demonstrating that parents and students alike share Avalon's philosophy for classically based, morally driven, single-sex education.
