Academic Philosophy

Avalon Academic Philosophy is guided by five basic principles:

  • western canon: The works of Homer, Virgil, Dante, Shakespeare and Dickens impart crucial knowledge and ideals that have kept them relevant for centuries. These works form the nucleus of Avalon's literature program. The Avalon School believes these works foster young men who mature into articulate, knowledgeable citizens with a broader understanding of their world, and the confidence to influence their surroundings for the better.

  • size: Avalon believes that preserving a student body of reasonable size as well as small classes is critical to maintaining boys' attention and fostering partnerships with parents. A small school creates more opportunities for boys to excel individually in various aspects of their work, helping them achieve the success and validation they need.

  • spirit of adventure: Boys are tested in and out of the classroom so that they may grow in their faith, physical prowess, and capacity to learn. Avalon believes that the spirit of adventure is intrinsic in all boys and thus seeks to foster it though the books they read, the places they visit and the example set forth by their teachers.

  • respect, reverence and faith: Religion plays a central role at Avalon. The school wants to help boys to be faith-filled and, more importantly, to experience the benefits such faith holds. Avalon has set forth a high standard for behavior and expects boys to approach life respectfully and chivalrously.

  • single-sex education: Research and empirical evidence alike increasingly demonstrate the benefits of single-sex education. The Avalon School believes strongly that boys have different needs than girls, in and out of the classroom. These needs are acknowledged and reflected through tailoring curriculum and teaching methods to the learning styles and interests of boys.
